Nber Working Paper Series a Welfare Criterion for Models with Distorted Beliefs
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper proposes a welfare criterion for economies in which agents have heterogeneously distorted beliefs. Instead of taking a stand on whose belief is correct, our criterion asserts that an allocation is belief-neutral efficient (inefficient) if it is efficient (inefficient) under any convex combination of agents' beliefs. While this criterion gives an incomplete ranking of social allocations, it can identify positiveand negative-sum speculation driven by conflicting beliefs in a broad range of economic environments. متن کاملNber Working Paper Series beyond Testing: Empirical Models of Insurance Markets
We describe recent advances in the empirical analysis of insurance markets. This new research proposes ways to estimate individual demand for insurance and the relationship between prices and insurer costs in the presence of adverse and advantageous selection. We discuss how these models permit the measurement of welfare distortions arising from asymmetric information and the welfare consequenc...

Nber Working Paper Series Immigration, Search, and Redistribution: a Quantitative Assessment of Native Welfare
We study the effects of immigration on native welfare in a general equilibrium model featuring two skill types, search frictions, wage bargaining, and a redistributive welfare state. Our quantitative analysis suggests that, in all 20 countries studied, immigration attenuates the effects of search frictions. These gains tend to outweigh the welfare costs of redistribution. Immigration has increa...
متن کاملDiversified Treatment under Ambiguity
This paper develops a broad theme about treatment under ambiguity through study of a particular decision criterion. The broad theme is that a planner may often want to cope with ambiguity by diversification, assigning observationally identical persons to different treatments. Study of the minimax-regret (MR) criterion substantiates the theme. The paper significantly extends my earlier analysis ...
